How I Actually Check Whether Atal Tunnel Is Open

Why I Don't Just Trust a Weather App

Every morning I get messages from people staring at a weather app, trying to guess if the tunnel will be open. They see snow in the forecast and assume it's closed. They see clear skies and assume it's open. Neither assumption is reliable.

I show weather numbers on the Atal Tunnel status page. Temperature, wind, humidity. Those come from a weather API. They're helpful context. If you see wind at 60 km/h and snow on the radar, you can guess things might get messy. But those numbers do not tell you whether the tunnel is actually open or closed right now. I could show you perfect blue-sky weather and a closed tunnel. I could show you heavy snowfall and an open tunnel.

The weather numbers are there because people asked for them. They wanted to know what conditions looked like. That's fine. But they are not what determines the status. The status comes from something else entirely.

I run the live checker myself. Not an automated feed. Not a script scraping some government website. I have a small network of local contacts, drivers and residents who live near the tunnel. When something changes, I hear about it. I verify it. Then I update the page. My aim is to get that update live within 20 to 30 minutes of the real change. Sometimes faster. Sometimes a little slower. But always from a person who actually saw it or talked to someone who did.

A weather app cannot do that. No app can.

What I'm Actually Checking

The tunnel itself is a piece of engineering. It works. But the tunnel is not the problem. The problem is getting to it.

There are more than 46 avalanche-prone sites on the approaches to the tunnel. That is a lot of places where snow can slide and block the road. The Border Roads Organisation built avalanche control structures specifically to protect those sections. Walls. Galleries. Deflection dams. They help. They reduce the risk compared to the old Rohtang route, which was a nightmare every winter.

But they do not eliminate the risk.

Fresh avalanches can still come down. Heavy snowfall can still bury a section of road. When that happens, the tunnel can close without much notice. Not because the tunnel itself is broken. Because you cannot reach it. Or because the road on the other side is blocked. Or because BRO needs to clear snow and they have to shut things down to do it safely.

So what am I actually checking? I am checking whether the road is passable on both sides. I am checking whether BRO has closed it for maintenance. I am checking whether a slide came down an hour ago that nobody has reported yet. I am checking whether the vehicles that went through this morning actually made it to the other side.

This is not something you can guess from a satellite image. You need a person on the ground, or a person who just talked to someone on the ground. That is what I do.

What the Tunnel's Own Safety Systems Do (and Don't Tell You)

The tunnel has safety infrastructure. CCTV cameras at both portals. Pollution sensors inside. Emergency phones. Fire systems. All of that is there to keep people safe while they are inside.

None of it tells you whether the tunnel is open today.

The CCTV feeds show you what is happening at the portals. If there is a queue of cars, you can see it. If the gates are closed, you can see it. But I do not have access to those feeds. And even if I did, a camera does not tell you why the gate is closed. Is it a routine maintenance closure? A slide on the approach road? A vehicle breakdown inside? The camera shows you a gate. It does not explain the reason.

The pollution sensors measure air quality inside the tunnel. That matters for safety. If CO levels get too high, the tunnel might close temporarily to clear the air. But that is rare. And again, the sensor reading does not tell you the status. It tells you a number. Someone still has to interpret it and decide what to do.

None of these systems replace the simple act of checking. Someone has to go look. Someone has to call a driver who just came through. Someone has to confirm that the road is open, not just assume it is because the weather looks fine or the tunnel's lights are on.

That is what my network does. We check. We confirm. We update.
