Is February a Good Time to Visit Manali?

What February Is Actually Like
February is still firmly winter in Manali. This is often the snowiest stretch of the year in this valley. I have lived here since 2018 and February consistently delivers the kind of snowfall that makes people book trips to begin with.
The weather is cold. Not the kind of cold you can shrug off with a light jacket. The kind where you feel it in your bones by late afternoon. Days are short. The sun, when it shows up, is welcome. But it does not warm things up much. According to the India Meteorological Department, February temperatures in Manali typically range from sub-zero at night to single digits during the day.
The roads into town are generally fine. Manali town itself sits at a lower elevation than the passes, so snow here comes and goes. It melts on the roads during the day, freezes again at night. The real snow accumulates up the valley and on the hillsides around town.
Crowds are thin. February is still a quiet month tourist-wise compared to summer. Fewer people, colder weather. You will not be fighting for a table at dinner or stuck in traffic on the Mall Road. The town moves at a slower pace. Some smaller shops and cafes close for the season, especially in Old Manali. Enough stays open to keep things comfortable, but do not expect the full summer buzz.
What to Plan Around
Road and Pass Conditions
Rohtang Pass and the higher passes are typically still closed in February. Snow blocks them, and the Border Roads Organisation does not start serious clearing work until March or April. Do not plan a trip that depends on crossing Rohtang. You will be disappointed. The Atal Tunnel changes things a bit. It stays open year round, but the road on the other side of the tunnel, toward Sissu and beyond, is weather dependent. One day is clear, the next brings a fresh dump that shuts things down for a few hours.
For Rohtang itself, do not assume anything. check live Rohtang Pass status before you make any plans that involve it. Most days in February the answer will be closed. If you are coming for snow, you do not need Rohtang anyway. The snow around town is plenty.
What to Pack
Bring proper winter gear. Not the kind you bought for a hill station weekend in the plains. Real boots with grip. A heavy jacket that blocks wind. Gloves, a warm hat, and layers you can add or remove as the day warms and cools.
If you plan to walk anywhere in the snow, waterproof shoes are not optional. Wet feet in February will ruin your day fast.
Where to Stay
Book something with good heating. Many budget guesthouses in Manali rely on space heaters or bukharis, which work fine if the room is well insulated. Check reviews specifically for winter stays. A place that is lovely in May can be miserable in February if the room does not hold heat.
Old Manali is quieter in February. Some of the riverside cafes shut down for the season. If you want more options for food and company, stay closer to the main town or New Manali. If you want peace and snow views, Old Manali is still the better choice.
Getting Around
Taxis are available but fewer drivers operate in winter. Book ahead if you need to go anywhere specific. The local buses run as usual. Walking is the best way to see the town, just watch your step on icy patches.
Who Should (and Shouldn't) Come in February
Come if you:
- Want to see and play in real snow without driving to a high altitude pass
- Prefer quiet streets and uncrowded viewpoints
- Enjoy sitting by a fire with a book while snow falls outside
- Already own good winter clothing and know how to use it
- Are flexible about your itinerary and do not mind if a road closes for a day
Skip February if you:
- Need to cross Rohtang or go to Leh
- Want warm weather and clear skies
- Are bringing young children or elderly people who struggle with cold
- Expect all cafes and shops to be open
- Have never experienced real winter and want to ease into it
February is a month for people who want winter, not people who want a vacation that happens to be in winter. The difference matters.
A Few Other Places to Consider
