Is March a Good Time to Visit Manali?

24 Jun 2026 · 7 min read

The Short Answer

Yes, March is a reasonable month to visit Manali. You get a genuine mix of late winter conditions and early spring calm without the full chaos of peak summer. The snow is melting at lower elevations but can still surprise you higher up. Crowds are picking up from March onward as the spring season begins, but it's noticeably calmer than what you'd face in June or July.

It's not the best month for guaranteed heavy snow. It's not the best month for guaranteed clear roads to every high pass. But if you want a trip that feels like winter without the deep freeze, and spring without the crowds, March works.

What March Is Actually Like

March is the transition out of winter in Manali. That means you get unpredictable weather in the best way. One morning you might wake up to fresh snow on the rooftops of Old Manali. By afternoon, the sun is warm enough to sit outside at a café without a jacket. The next day could be clear blue skies or a grey drizzle that turns into wet snow by evening.

Lower down, around Vashisht and the main Manali town, the snow melts fast. You won't find thick snowpack on the ground in the bazaar or along the Mall Road. But drive twenty minutes up toward Solang or further toward the Atal Tunnel, and the landscape changes completely. Snow lingers on the hillsides, on the pine branches, along the edges of the road. It's patchy, not pristine, but it's still there.

Higher passes like Rohtang typically remain closed or just starting to open this time of year. Don't plan your trip around driving over Rohtang in March unless you have checked the conditions first. I update the status on manali.today directly from what I see and what my contacts report, so check live Rohtang Pass status before you rely on it for your itinerary. The same goes for the Atal Tunnel itself. The tunnel stays open year round, but the roads leading to it from either side can get tricky. I keep a check live Atal Tunnel status page for exactly that reason.

Crowds start picking up from March onward. You will see more cars on the highway, more people in the cafés, more noise in the main market. But compared to the absolute gridlock of May and June, March is peaceful. You can still find a quiet corner in Old Manali without fighting for a table. The evening walk along the river feels like yours, not a parade.

What to Plan Around

Roads and Passes

The Manali Keylong highway is the main concern in March. Snowfall can close it for a day or two. The Border Roads Organisation clears it fast, but fast in mountain time is still slower than you want. If your plan depends on reaching Leh or going beyond Manali, March is risky. If your plan is to stay in Manali and the immediate valley, you will be fine. For more on the geography and climate of the region, Manali's location in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh is well documented.

I update the snow conditions on check live snow status page every day during this season. I walk around, I talk to the taxi drivers, I check what the locals are saying. That page is the quickest way to know what you are driving into.

What to Pack

Pack for both seasons at once. You need a proper winter jacket, gloves, and a beanie for mornings and evenings. But you also need a light layer for the afternoon sun. Waterproof shoes are essential. The snow that melts during the day turns to slush and mud. Dry feet make the difference between a good trip and a miserable one.

Do not bring summer clothes and hope for the best. March can still drop below freezing at night. I have seen tourists show up in sneakers and a hoodie, shivering at sunset, wondering why nobody warned them. I am warning you now.

Where to Stay

You do not need to book months ahead for March like you would for summer. But good places in Old Manali fill up on weekends. If you want a specific guesthouse or a riverside cabin, book a week or two in advance. Do not leave it to the day you arrive unless you enjoy settling for whatever is left.

I have written a complete Manali travel guide that covers accommodation options, how to get around, and what to expect month by month. It is built from what I have learned living here since 2018. It will save you the generic advice you find on travel blogs written by people who visited once.

What to Do

March is good for walks, short hikes, and café hopping in Old Manali. The snow line sits high enough that you can trek lower trails without postholing through deep drifts. The Jogini Falls trail from Vashisht is usually doable. The walks along the Manalsu River behind Old Manali are clear and beautiful.

If you want snow activities, head up to Solang. The ski lift operates in March if conditions allow. But read Solang Valley Paragliding: When to Actually Go, and What I'd Skip before you pay for anything up there. Not every activity runs reliably in March, and some are not worth your money even when they do.

For a full day plan in my part of town, I wrote Old Manali: Where I Actually Live, and How I'd Spend a Day There. It covers the specific cafés I go to, the walks I actually take, and the spots I send my own friends when they visit.

Who Should (and Shouldn't) Come in March

Come in March if

You want snow but not deep winter. You want to see white on the mountains without dealing with road closures every other day. You are happy with a quieter version of Manali where you can actually hear the river at night. You like the idea of sitting in a café with a hot drink while snow falls outside, knowing you can walk home without needing chains on your shoes.

March suits photographers who want varied conditions. The light shifts fast, the snow comes and goes, the clouds sit low one day and clear the next. You get more character in your shots than the flat blue sky of summer.

It also suits budget travelers. Flights and hotels are cheaper than summer. You can negotiate better rates on taxis and activities because the demand is lower.

Skip March if

You want guaranteed heavy snowfall you can play in every day. That is January and February. March snow is unreliable at lower elevations. You might get a good dump, or you might get rain.

You want to drive over Rohtang Pass. Wait until May or June when it opens properly. Checking the live status helps, but March is simply not the time to bet your itinerary on a high altitude pass. For official updates on road conditions and permits, the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation provides useful information.

You want peak summer energy with every café packed, every trail full, every event happening. March is calm. If you want chaos, come in June. I wrote about that in Why Manali Traffic Photos Online Are Missing the Point. It is honest about what summer actually looks like here.

You hate unpredictable weather. If you need your vacation to be sunny and warm every single day, March will frustrate you. Come in October instead. Clear skies, crisp air, no snow anxiety.

I live here. I run manali.today because I got tired of seeing tourists show up with wrong expectations based on bad advice. March is a good month for the right person. If that sounds like you, come. Pack smart, check the conditions before you drive, and give yourself time to sit still and watch the mountains change. That is what this month is actually for.
